The Atkins Diet

SalmonThe Atkins diet, is a low-carbohydrate diet created by Dr. Robert Atkins. His first book was published in 1972, and it’s the grandaddy of of low carbohydrate living.

Thousands have found healthy living success eating the Atkins way. Atkins is more specific than other diets regarding how many carbs you are allowed each day.

Phase 1 of the Atkins diet allows you a net of 20 grams of carbohydrates per day for the first two weeks. During this phase, you add salads and other leafy green vegetables to your meals. You’ll also drink 8 glasses of water per day, which is very important to prevent dehydration as your body adjusts to this type of eating.

During Phase 2, or the “ongoing weight loss” (OWL) phase of Atkins allows an increase in carbohydrate intake, but remains at levels where weight loss continues. The allowed carbohydrate level increases each week by 5 net grams per day (as long as weight loss continues).

The goal in OWL is to find the “Critical Carbohydrate Level for Losing” and The OWL phase lasts until weight is within 10 pounds of your target weight.

Millions of followers have found this way of eating to be an effective plan for improving health and shedding pounds for good. Important new studies from leading universities are showing what many have known for years – not only is the Atkins way delicious, but it’s safe and healthy.
